The Emotional Logic of “Awe Bei”
My parents often called me “awe bei” in Shanghainese when I was little. (No, it doesn’t mean “garbage.”) It wasn’t until later that I finally figured out from context that “awe bei” meant doing something contrarian, usually something that displeased my parents.
I can see why my parents described me as “awe bei.”… Continue reading →
Q2 Report: Getting Out and About
I described in my previous post the various classes I have been taking in Q2 – the second three months after quitting BigLaw. Taking miscellaneous classes that amount to no degree or diploma feels decadent. I never did this before: every class I took, even electives, always served to land me onto the next step of the StairMaster of predictable professional life.… Continue reading →
My Name Is…
Up until now I have remained anonymous on this blog. I have been candid about my thoughts, my rants, my hopes and my fears. I think regular readers have a pretty good idea of my personality. Well, now, you can know my name too.
I was invited to participate in New York Time’s Room for Debate this week to discuss the effectiveness of strict parenting.… Continue reading →
Quitting BigLaw: Part I – Why Is It So Hard?
As mentioned in my last entry, I am going to write about what it takes for associates who are thinking about quitting BigLaw to actually do so. I am going address this topic in four parts: BigLaw life and why is it so hard to quit; the three questions every BigLaw associate should ask him or herself; some practical tips to consider before quitting; and where I am now (a final added part that will feed nicely into my next quarterly review).… Continue reading →
Can I Be a Momentum Changer?
The football season for my team, the New York Giants, ended on Sunday. But it really ended when we were unprepared for an onside kick with 7.5 minutes to go in a critical Eagles/Giants game on December 19. We never recovered – restarted – since then.
Despite suffering a bad cold I made it to the New Meadowlands Stadium on that fateful day, hoping to witness my G-Men defeat their arch nemesis.… Continue reading →
A New Year’s Restart
It has been almost a month since I last blogged. A few days after publishing my last entry about football, I took off to Boulder and Denver for a short vacation and got sick during the trip. With chills, aches, fever, hacking coughs, and the whole nine yards, I ended up spending much of the trip lying in bed in the hotel.… Continue reading →
34 Going On the Rest of My Life
I haven’t blogged for a while. To my surprise, I missed it. I missed pouring out my thoughts onto a blank page, translating — approximating — their complexity into a string of words. Words with meaning and rhythm. I missed the revision process of trashing, trimming, tweaking — searching for the right words that seemed to be lodged in the abyss of my gray matter ready to be found, so close yet so far.… Continue reading →
Q1 Report: Mental and Emotional
Because my mental and emotional states for the past three months have been so intertwined, I am going to review both areas in this single post.
Much of this blog has been focusing on my mental and emotional journey after leaving BigLaw. For this Q1 report, I won’t repeat or summarize the experiences I have already written about.… Continue reading →

Q1 Report: Social
Before I quit, one of the risk factors I feared was becoming bored or lonely. My husband works a lot, so I am home by myself most of the time. But as it turns out I’ve hardly felt bored or lonely.
I have been spending many hours with our cats Bellucci and MacGregor, as well as with foster cats when we have them.… Continue reading →
The Agony of Writing
My dislike of drafting was a significant factor contributing to me quitting law. But drafting legal documents was considerably easier than personal writing. There are no penalties for lacking word variety or having half-page long sentences with multiple subordinate clauses. In personal writing, so much hinges on aesthetics and clarity. I disliked drafting, but I hate writing.… Continue reading →
